Jackson Pollock 51

2 Mar

It’s Friday. What does that mean? It’s time to spend a little quality time with Jackson Pollock.

Because painting has a life of its own, I try to let it live. —Jackson Pollock

Graduated: Diploma, Graphic Design, 1988

Current city: Vancouver, BC

What are you up to now?
I run a design firm, Ion Branding + Design, with fellow classmate Rod Roodenburg, that we started right after graduation. In fact, in the beginning before we had an office, we covertly worked out of a storage room at Emily Carr for six weeks. Security back then wasn’t what it is today! It’s been 23 years and we’re still having fun and learning every day. We have a staff of six and specialize in brand strategy and implementation. We work with small start-ups through to governments and large corporations locally and internationally with a focus on clients who operate ethically and sustainably. We also stay connected to the community with our work for cultural groups and our $25,000 One Good Idea Award.

Graduated: BFA, 2008

Current city: Vancouver, BC

What are you up to now?
Since graduating, I have been painting full time. I bought a truck. I use it to move my studio every few months, rotating between Vancouver, California and Haida Gwaii. I have built my studio in heritage buildings, abandoned warehouses, garages, tarped-off patios, immaculate gallery spaces and woodsheds used to butcher deer. My most recent paintings explore the portrait as form in space. They combine references of the portrait, the skull and the mask. I am interested in the personal identity of the individual and the cosmic identity of the species.
